Photography Collecting

News date: 2011-05-30

"Great collections are rich in examples, but not complete. Incompleteness: motivated by the desire for completeness. There is always “something else”. And when you have everything, then you probably desire a better copy of a copy that you already have; and in the case of mass produced objects, you simply need another copy in case yours gets lost, or stolen, or damaged, or destroyed. A backup. A collection of shadows... The need to collect is redundant, extravagant and exaggerated... He who hesitates, who asks, “Do I need this?”, “Is this truly essential?” is not a collector. The collection is always something more than just “necessary”..."
So wrote Susan Sontag on the essence of collecting in The Volcano Lover. And what is important for us in collecting photographs? Has this year's Festival infected you with the collecting bug? We are halfway through the Photomonth in Krakow. Behind us are the meetings and presentations on collecting with Charlotte Cotton, Jerzy Lapiński, Wojciech Nowicki and Cezary Pieczyński. We have taken part in dusting off the family archives. Enriched by the lessons learned during these panel discussions and lectures, are you thinking of establishing your own collection?
To meet the enhanced interest in fine art photography collecting, for the first time at Photomonth you can acquire images by the young Polish artists exhibited at this year's ShowOFF Section. The fourteen names put forward are at the same time a confirmation of the many faces of contemporary photography. Together, styles and trends mix – documentary, conceptual, and even verging on fashion. The broad range of both topics and forms of expression provide the opportunity to see in one place the directions in which contemporary photography is developing.
Isn’t it just as Susan Sontag wrote ¬– to collect photographs is to collect the world...
Selected works for sale at a special price and in a limited edition of 25 copies are available from the festival office located at the Camelot Gallery at ul. św. Tomasza 17.
