Krakow Photomonth Festival 2013

May 16 – June 16, 2013

The 11th edition of the Krakow Photomonth Festival will focus on fashion. We will take a closer look at what we wear, how and why we wear it, and how we present and represent it. The Polish-British cultural anthropologist Bronisław Malinowski used to say that one can study any culture as a whole through its dietary and sexual habits. We believe that clothes and clothes-related customs might be a similar key to our contemporary culture.

We are interested in a broad continuum ranging from an individual style to the fashion industry template, from private and intimate rituals to public and oppressive dress codes and uniforms. We are fascinated with camouflage, disguise and masks. We find everyday clothes and high fashion equally important. We believe that clothes can be an exceptional tool helping to shape and express one’s identity, and at the same time they can be used to force conformity. We believe that clothes-related habits are one of the fields where many of the most important social and cultural conflicts and issues are manifested.

During the 11th edition of the Krakow Photomonth Festival we want to approach the role of clothes, style, look and fashion from the critical perspective and inspire the audience to rethink its role and function. At the same time we want to avoid easy political and intellectual statements and provide the audience with a unique emotional and aesthetic experience.

This year’s Main Programme will open with a group exhibition entitled The Limits of Fashion (presenting over 20 projects analysing the leading theme of the Festival), and consists of a wide overview of fashion photography from the extraordinary F.C. Gundlach Collection, surprising works by Ghislain Dussart, a new and unique look at the archives of Tadeusz Rolke, works by the unprecedented classicist Walter Pfeiffer and heroine chic-creator Corinne Day, fascinating observations by Roy Villevoy, the daring viewpoints of the Ukrainian Synchrodogs and the records of an obsession by Milou Abel carefully translated into an exhibition.

This year the Experimental Section will be a mobile exhibition presented in the form of a fashion periodical, May Magazine, led by editor-in-chief Karolina Sulej in co-operation with mentor curator Raphaëlle Stopin, the curator in charge of the photographic section of the International Photography and Fashion Festival in Hyères.

The ShowOFF Section will present the works of 10 young aspiring artists who won the competition this year, now working on their exhibitions together with the curators of the Jury to be presented during the Festival.

This year's programme holds strong points new in the formula of the Festival: the Masters’ Series meetings, allowing our public to meet, observe and learn from the Best of the Best in the photographic world (this year with a focus on fashion) and the International photo.mov Competition, open to all with a new approach to presentation of images using modern montage techniques. Other things that can be found in the Festival’s schedule include films on established photographers, workshops, the SlideNight presentation, curator’s tours, and traditionally the Portfolio Review.

So save the date, Krakow Photomonth Festival 2013 officially opens on May 17th.
