VANITY. FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY FROM THE F.C. GUNDLACH COLLECTION

Vanity. Fashion Photography from the F.C. Gundlach Collection – an exhibit presented at the National Museum in Krakow – is a survey of the 20th century’s best fashion photographers. Franz Christian Gundlach, a German artist and reporter, has been collecting masterworks in this field for years. In his collections, one finds not only the best-known artists of the post-war years, like Helmut Newton, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, and Cecil Beaton, but also pioneers such as Erwin Blumenfeld and Wolf.
Above all, Gundlach is interested in the possibility of presenting the spirit of the age in photographs, and the works he selected are not only works of art, but first and foremost documents. According to him, staged photography is often no less a witness of its time than journalism photography. Vanity also provides viewers with an opportunity to see a few icons of fashion photography in a museum setting – icons that have shaped the awareness of fashion magazine readers throughout the world.

Franz Christian Gundlach (born 1926, Heinbach)
German photographer who shot many photo sessions for fashion magazines in West Germany. A long-time collector of photographic art, who in 2000 founded the F.C. Gundlach Foundation, which promotes art and research into photography. The main subject of his collection is the image of man in photography.
